Mark Dvorak will host at Wesley's Place
Mark Dvorak will host at Wesley's Place

One of the things I value most at Wesley’s Place is intention. I want each concert to feel thoughtfully shaped from the moment the doors open to the final applause. That is why I am especially excited to have Mark Dvorak hosting several shows this year.

Mark will be hosting Buddy Mondlock, Lil Rev, and Anne Hills, and in May he will lead our annual Pete Seeger birthday celebration. For each of these nights, Mark will open the show with about 15 minutes of music, and that opening matters more than you might think.

Mark Dvorak is a folk singer, songwriter, educator, and historian who has spent decades immersed in American folk music. He understands not just the songs themselves, but the traditions they come from and the communities they have helped shape. When Mark steps onstage, he brings a sense of welcome and continuity that immediately puts the room at ease.

As a host, Mark’s role is to help orient the evening. His opening gives the audience a shared starting point and invites everyone into a listening frame of mind. It creates a sense of connection before the featured artist ever plays a note. In a listening room like Wesley’s Place, that kind of grounding makes a real difference.

Each of the artists Mark is hosting fits naturally into that approach. Buddy Mondlock is a songwriter whose work rewards attention, with songs that unfold gently and stay with you. Lil Rev brings warmth, humor, and deep roots knowledge to his performances, especially through blues and traditional American music. Anne Hills has long been a powerful voice in contemporary folk, offering songs that combine clarity, compassion, and beautifully crafted melodies. These are artists whose music benefits from being presented with care and context.

Then there is May, when Mark will lead our Pete Seeger birthday celebration. This night always feels especially meaningful to me. Pete Seeger’s influence runs through so much of what Wesley’s Place is about. Songs that invite participation. Music as a tool for connection. The idea that singing together can build community. Mark has spent years honoring Pete Seeger’s legacy, not as something frozen in time, but as a living tradition that still speaks to us now. Having Mark host this celebration feels like the right way to hold that night.

Another reason I am grateful to have Mark involved is the community he brings with him. Mark has a strong following in our area, made up of people who care deeply about folk music and live performance. Welcoming those listeners into Wesley’s Place, and introducing our regular audience to Mark’s work in return, feels like a genuine meeting of musical communities. That kind of exchange is how scenes grow in healthy, lasting ways.

At Wesley’s Place, I want concerts to feel like gatherings rather than transactions. I want people to feel comfortable, curious, and open. A good host helps create that atmosphere. Mark does this naturally, with warmth, knowledge, and a deep respect for both the music and the audience.

I am excited about these hosted nights because they reflect what I hope Wesley’s Place can be. A place where songs are heard fully. Where stories are shared thoughtfully. Where tradition and contemporary voices meet in a room that listens.

I hope you will join us for these shows, whether you come for one or decide to make a habit of it. I think you will feel the difference from the very first note.
